In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), server shipments totalled 722 thousand units in the second quarter of 2008, a 14.6 per cent increase from the same period last year (see Table 3). Server revenue totalled $4.8 billion in the second quarter of 2008, a 12.7 per cent increase over the same quarter last year.

"We continued to see growth in the second quarter of 2008 in unit and revenue terms, boosting the overall performance for the first half of 2008,” said Errol Rasit, senior research analyst at Gartner. “Continued demand contributed to positive results in EMEA, while a strong Euro exchange rate helped drive healthy Dollar revenue growth. These positive factors have helped to outweigh any potential negative growth influences such as consolidation or short term budgetary constraints.”

In the x86 market, total volumes in EMEA grew by 16.1 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2007. Strong performances by HP and Dell bolstered the growth in this segment. In particular, Dell’s growth of 22.1 per cent outpaced its nearest rivals, driven largely by increased volumes in low end servers.

In the second quarter of 2008, RISC and Itanium Unix servers grew 17.9 per cent in revenue while units declined 6.5 per cent year-on-year. A slightly more modest revenue growth of 1.8 per cent in Euros reflects a strong exchange rate effect in the quarter.

In server shipments, HP retained its market share maintaining its No.1 position, with shipments increasing 14.9 per cent year-on-year (see Table 4). Mr Rasit added: “Dell again outpaced its nearest rivals growing 22.1 per cent year-on-year. IBM and Fujitsu/FSC each lost volume share in the second quarter of 2008, while Sun maintained its share position compared to last year accounting for 4.2 per cent of the overall server market.”
